News List Module Documentation

Introduction

Group Package 1 websites contain a mix of default verbiage and imagery, with your group's details. This is managed for you by Scouts Online. There is no ability change the settings.

If you'd like to upgrade to a higher package level, please contact us.

Showcase your News and Blog articles in lists on your websites

Whether you want to display general news stories or stories for a specific section or team, the News List module can be configured for your own scenario.

Use Cases

The following panels show specific tasks. Click on a panel to see the procedures.

Setup a Basic News List

Setup a news list module or add one to your own pages.

To edit a module, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • Select a Display Type
  • Tick all the Story Types that you want to show news articles for
  • Set the Animation Fields as required
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

You may also add a title to your news list by editing the Text/HTML module above the news list.

NB. If you make a mistake, you may reverse the change in the Admin/Admin Audit Trail

Change the Display Type

Change the appearance of your news list to suit your page's layout.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • Change the Display Type. See Fig. 1
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Change the Display Type again until you find a layout that works for your page
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

NB. If you make a mistake, you may reverse the change in the Admin/Admin Audit Trail

Keep Your Website Current

Most website visitors only want to see relatively recent news or blog articles. Limit the stories shown in your list.

Most website visitors only want to see relatively recent news or blog articles.

To limit the stories shown in your list, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • Limit the stories shown in the list by changing the Date Range field. See Fig. 1
  • You can also limit stories to News, Blogs or All in the News/Blogs field
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

Set the Height of Your List

Set the maximum number of stories to display, add paging to your list and limit the height of your news list.

You can set the maximum number of stories to display, add paging to your list and limit the height of your news list.

To do these, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • To limit the number of stories to display, set the Max. Stories field. Set to 6 in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2
  • To add paging to show X number of stories before clicking to move to the next page, set the Stories per Page field to the number of stories to display before paging. Set to 6 in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3
  • Set the Max Height field to the maximum number of pixels to display, with a "px" suffix. E.g. 280px - See Fig. 1 and Fig. 4
    A vertical scrollbar will be added to the ns list if required.
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

Include Stories from your Groups

If any of the Groups or Units in your District have a package 3 Scouts Online website, you can show their news stories on your website.

If any of the Groups or Units in your District have a package 3 Scouts Online website, you can show their news stories on your website. This is a good way to populate your website and keep in relevant.

To set this up, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • You may want to consult the Groups before doing this
  • Tick the Incl. Group Stories field
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

Any news stories shown from your Groups will include their name in the story's title. See Fig. 2 below.

Include Stories from your Districts and Groups

If any of your District or their Groups/Units have a Scouts Online website, you can show their news stories on your website.

If any of your District or their Groups/Units have a Scouts Online website, you can show their news stories on your website. This is a good way to populate your website and keep in relevant.

To set this up, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • You may want to consult your Districts and Groups before doing this
  • Ticking the Incl. Group Stories field will show stories from any Groups in your County with a package 3 website
  • Ticking the Incl. District Stories field will show stories from any of your Districts with a package 2 website
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes

Any news stories shown from your Districts and Groups will include their name in the story's title. See Fig. 2 below.

Ask for Stories from Viewers

If you want to ask your website visitors to send in their stories, then you can add a message and contact form to your news list.

If you want to ask your website visitors to send in their stories, then you can add a message and contact form to your news list.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings (see here) or add a module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • Tick the Show Contact Form field. See Fig. 1
  • Click Save
  • Your will see a Text/HTML module and a Contact Form module appear below your news list
  • Override the Text/HTML module to add text to request news stories:
    • Tick the Hide Bottom Margin field to avoid unnecessary space between the text and the form
    • Add your enticing text message
  • Override the Contact Form module. See Fig. 3:
    • Select a General Purpose Contact Form
    • Add an Email Title
    • Add an Email Introduction message to the person who will receive the contact form email
    • Add Auto-Reply Email Confirmation Message, which will be emailed to the person who filled in the form

Add a News List for a Campsite Page

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Add a News List module to your own pages, using the Page Designer
  • Click the settings below the module and override the default settings - see here
  • Set the Display Style
  • Tick the Campsite Story Type
  • Click Save to keep your changes or Cancel to abandon your changes
  • Re-open the page to see the changes
