Growth & Development

The Growth and Development Team

What Growth and Development means for you:

Every young person in Winchester who wants to be a Beaver, Cub, Scout or Explorer Scout, should be able to do so.

To do this we have an incredible team who work behind the scenes to make this happen.

Aim

Every young person in Winchester who wants to be a Beaver, Cub, Scout or Explorer Scout, should be able to do so.

This is the Development aim for Winchester Scouts.

Strategy: more Scout places for young people

Our strategy has both a hard and a soft side.

Hard side. The hard side is about building up numbers.
  • First, we are adding many more Beaver Colonies for 6 year olds - our youngest age group, for them to 'move on' to additional Cub Packs, Scout Troops and Explorer Units over a 12 year life-cycle.
  • Second, we are retaining increasing numbers of Explorer Scouts. We do this by providing many more exciting Adventurous Activities, Expeditions, International opportunities, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

Soft Side. The soft side is about winning hearts and minds.
  • We need to persuade many more Parents to become leaders, section assistants and Executive Committee members & Charity Trustees.
  • We need to persuade more Councillors & Council Officers to provide us with hard support through long leases on land at peppercorn rents for new Scout led and owned community buildings – electoral Ward by Ward.

Performance Outcomes

Over the past 5 years the youth numbers have increased by an impressive 43% from 930 to 1,335. Adult volunteer numbers have increased by an even more impressive 81% from 225 to 408. Joining Lists remain at high levels with the demand for Scouts in the wider Winchester area, set to increase from 20% towards 30% for the 6-10 year old cohorts.
