Giving to the Scouts

Once a Scout, always a Scout

We want to keep former Scouts from Winchester in touch with what is going on today. As you can see from our web pages Scouting in Winchester has never been stronger.  Lots of things change - the uniform - the badges - the programme. But the ethos and values of Scouting continue from generation to generation.

Leave a legacy to Scouting in Winchester in your Will

After providing for your family and friends you might consider leaving a legacy in your Will for the benefit of young people in Winchester who are following in your scouting footsteps.  A legacy is a vital way to help Winchester scouts. This can fund capital development or educational charity work for young people between the ages of 6 and 17.  We are the largest voluntary organisation in Winchester with over 200 volunteer leaders and more than 300 supporters and helpers. This is a very deserving cause. Your gift will make a real difference for the young people of Winchester.

Making it easy for you to include Winchester Scouts in your Will

Many people say that they would happily leave a gift in their Will but only a few do. This is because people think this might be difficult to do, be it changing or writing a Will.  If you already have a Will, and you now want to leave a legacy to Winchester Scouts this is easy to do. You can make a change or an addition to your Will without having to rewrite it. This addition or change is called a Codicil. You can find this by clicking on the Codicil icon below.  A codocil is not legally binding on its own. It has to be part of your main Will. It is best to seek the advice of a solicitor.  If you have any questions about leaving a legacy to Winchester Scouts please use the icon opposite to contact us for help.  To see an example of a Codicil click on the link on the left.

There are three types of Legacy

  • You can leave a specific sum of money. This is called a Pecuniary Legacy
    … or …
  • You can leave a particular item. This is called a Specific Legacy
    … or …
  • Once you have provided for your family and friends, you can gift some fraction or all of the remaining part of your estate. This is called a Residuary Legacy.
It might be best to talk to your solicitor about these three options for a legacy, and which is the most suitable for you

Your Will and the Codicil

When you have decided which type of legacy you would like to use for a gift to Winchester Scouts, you are ready to put this in writing in a Will.  We recommend that you use a solicitor. This will ensure validity under English law. The wrong wording or the wrong choice of witnesses could invalidate your Will.  If you already have a Will and you now wish to alter it to include a gift to Winchester Scouts, this is done with a Codicil as described above.

If you do not already have a solicitor we can help to put you in contact with one of the City's firms of solicitors.  We do recommend the use of a lawyer for this, and again please contact us for advice on this.
